Consumer Alert for Maryland Home Improvement Customers

Maryland consumers now have more time to cancel a door-to-door home improvement contract… Courtesy of Maryland revised HB 439!
If you’re a Maryland resident, and plan on hiring a roofing, window, or siding contractor… Then this important law change may apply to you.
Effective June 1, 2016, Maryland law gives buyers of home improvement services via door-to-door sales a total of five business days to cancel a transaction.
And get this…if you’re 65 or older, you get seven business days.
This gives buyers a little longer to opt out of a transaction in order to cut down on unfair or deceptive practices from unscrupulous contractors.
Personally, I think most local MD contractors are fair and legitimate, and this revised bill is primarily aimed to protect your rights.
According to the law, we (and any legitimate contractors) must provide you, the consumer, a Notice of Cancellation, which include the specific terms and conditions to be met.
In our home improvement estimates and proposals, we also include the terms and conditions in of our Agreement.
If a Maryland home improvement or roofing contractor doesn’t or won’t provide you this document, then you should be very careful before signing an agreement or giving them any money up front.
