1) No MHIC license (or a license that isn’t theirs)

Some storm chasers have no license at all, or show a license that doesn’t match their name or company.

2) “We’ll handle the insurance for you”

Your insurance is between you and your carrier. If you authorize a contractor to act for you, you may be giving up your right to choose who does the work. Some contractors may try to pressure you into signing agreements before you fully understand the scope of the repairs. Any reputable contractor can provide a free estimate and explain the work needed — no strings attached.

3) Inferior materials and rushed workmanship

Storm chasers often buy the cheapest materials to maximize profits. Local contractors rely on trusted local suppliers and established relationships—so you’re more likely to receive better materials, proper installation, and reliable warranty support if anything ever needs attention.

4) They disappear when the next storm hits

A storm chaser may be gone before you even notice a problem. A local contractor will still be here to stand behind the work and handle any future issues. When you hire someone who works in your community year-round, you know exactly where to find them if you ever need help later.
